Faced with a sickness they didn’t understand, many frontline workers experienced grief, exhaustion, melancholy, anxiety, and fear. SARS-CoV-2 is a coronavirus that causes COVID-19. In the United States, it has claimed the lives of more than 1.5 million people and 92.7 million cases. Worldwide, there have been about 594 million cases and 6.45 million plus deaths reported since November of 2019. It was a vengeful force, and it spared no one from its wrath. Emergency rooms and hospitals were overflowing as people from deserted cities sought medical attention. COVID-caused pneumonia is most commonly found in both lungs. These symptoms include shortness of breath as well as respiratory distress and coughing, which are all caused by fluid filling up the air sacs in the lungs. Due to this, respiratory therapists play a critical role in the COVID-19 response, and ventilators have become indispensable medical tools. Ventilators had to be manufactured in factories that had given up their premises.
As the number of patients who were unable to breathe increased, respiratory therapists were on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So, who are respiratory therapists? And why are they so important?

The Author
Dr. Domonisa Hurley, DrPH, RRT
Dr. Domonisa Hurley is a native Harlemite, growing up in the Heart of Harlem as the youngest of 8 children born to a single-parent household. Born with respiratory problems, she was diagnosed as an infant with Asthma. However, this did not stop her involvement in school and community activities. Her early involvement in dance, basketball, choir, school government, and drama, gave her the confidence, passion, and love for public service that she would need later in her career. A week after earning her bachelor’s degree from S.U.N.Y Stony Brook in 1993, her mother was diagnosed with cancer. She was on her way to medical school and found herself in a quandary. Her mother was not able to take care of herself and needed help.
While living in the projects in Harlem on 125th street, she received a flyer advertising programs available to the residents. These programs were for training and education for various jobs in the medical field. Her only goal was to take care of her mother. Although she was overqualified for most of the programs because of her degree, she chose an 8-week program for Nurses Assistant solely because it educated her in how to take care of her sick mother. She learned how to do everything it took to take care of her mother who passed away in August of 1994. This selfless act would change the trajectory of her life and prepare her for a career in Respiratory Therapy.
Dr. Domonisa has a Doctorate in Public Health concentrating in Epidemiology from Capella University, a MA in Public Administration specializing in Emergency and Disaster Management from Metropolitan College of New York, a Bachelor of Arts degree from State University of New York at Stonybrook, an Associates Degree from The Borough of Manhattan Community College, and has been in Respiratory Therapy for 19 years. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society, a 3-time recipient of the Dedication and Excellent Service Award from Brookdale University Medical Center, a recipient of the International Leadership Women of Excellence Award, and a member of the Capella University Honors and Leadership Excellence Society. She is a member of the American Association of Respiratory Care, the National Board of Respiratory Care, the American Heart Association, the Black Emergency Managers Association, Speak Your Power Now Academy.
In her 19 years of working in respiratory care, the last 2 years have been the most challenging. Dealing with and witnessing the loss of life during the COVID-19 pandemic, has had a significant impact in the way she now approaches and addresses respiratory care. She has a continued commitment to train and educate the medical community, the public sector, and the private business sectors in life-saving techniques and advancements in respiratory care. Dr. Domonisa is the founder of Impact City Consulting Inc., Saving Lives One Goal LLC and The Collective working with major companies teaching CPR and other life-saving techniques. She is also a life/ I.M.P.A.C.T. and business coach and still a practicing Respiratory Therapists.
